ST MARYS – The home-standing St. Marys wrestling team won seven of the 13 contested bouts, including four falls, and added a forfeit and three decisions, sneaking by Clearfield, 36-31, Thursday night in a dual meet that wasn’t decided until the final bout.

Three Bison Noah Cline (106), Devin Sinclair (195) and Jordan Lancaster (285) pinned their Dutchmen opponents, while Dylan Graham earned a major decision at 132 pounds.

The dual meet started at 160 pounds with the Dutchmen claiming the first three bouts. St. Marys’ Alex Feldbauer and Joey McLaughlin helped propel their team out in front 15-0 with falls at 160 and 182 pounds, respectively.

At 170, Clearfield’s Kody Hepfer almost pinned Josh Cameroni in the first period. Instead, he came out up 5-0 at which point Cameroni rolled the Bison to his back and had him in trouble.

The opening stanza ended in a deadlock at five apiece. But Cameroni would use a second-period reversal and a third-period takedown before riding Hepfer to set the 9-5 decision.

Bison Devin Sinclair ended St. Marys’ three-bout run, pinning Ben Cheatle at 195 pounds. The end came 45 seconds into the second period and marked Sinclair’s first-ever varsity win.

St. Marys’ Gary Fledderman pushed his team’s lead to 21-6 with a fall in 2:53 over Shane Billings in the next bout. However, Clearfield’s Jordan Lancaster and Noah Cline trimmed their team’s deficit to 21-18 with back-to-back falls.

Lancaster pinned Brian Carnahan in 3:17, while Cline decked Raymond Dent with one second remaining in the middle stanza. St. Marys pushed its lead to 33-18 with a William McGonnel forfeit and an Evan Smith fall (4:04) at 113 and 120 pounds, respectively.

In the next bout, Bison Jonathan Sponsler and Dylan Smith went scoreless through three periods and the first overtime period. Sponsler managed to reverse the Dutchmen in his tiebreaker period and rode him for the decision.

Clearfield’s Dylan Graham used five takedowns to major Alex Coudriet, 12-4 at 132. Then, Wyatt Stucke followed by posting a thrilling 9-5 decision over Dutchman Tyler Yetzer.

Down 3-0 in the second, Stucke took down Yetzer only to have him escape. The Bison sophomore knotted the bout with a second takedown, but Yetzer escaped to go up by one after two periods. Stucke tied the bout at five with an escape and scored a takedown and two backs with less than a minute remaining in regulation.

Teammate Nolan Barger pulled the Bison within two, 33-31, defeating Sam Miller 4-0 at 145, setting up the deciding bout.

St. Marys’ William Gabor scored the opening takedown against Kody Mayhew when he came out on top in a first-period scramble. Gabor used an escape and another takedown to extend his advantage to 5-0.

Mayhew would reverse Gabor to his back for two near fall, pulling within one. But Gabor reversed the Bison to set the 7-4 final.
